History of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica

The Sacré-Coeur Basilica was built between 1875 and 1914. The original architect was Paul Abadie; he died in 1884 and never saw his design completed. The construction of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica was extremely difficult, especially the foundation, which was a major challenge. A limestone called Travertine was used for the construction of the church. This is a French limestone that produces a white layer when it rains.
