History of Musée du Louvre

The Louvre was originally built as a fortress in the 12th century. In 1546, the old fortress was transformed into a city palace for the French royal family. In 1682, King Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles as his new home. As a result, the Louvre became a show palace for displaying the royal art collection. After the French Revolution, the Louvre was chosen as a national museum. In 1793, Musée du Louvre opened its doors with a collection of 537 French paintings. Today, the museum shows mostly international artwork.

Musée du Louvre has undergone several renovations. The most recent additions to the museum are two glass pyramids. The biggest pyramid serves as the museum’s primary entrance. A smaller duplicate of the top pyramid is located beneath the ground. The purpose of the second pyramid is to admit and distribute daylight in an underground shopping mall named Carrousel du Louvre. The chic shops in Carrousel du Louvre are open daily from 10:00 am to 7:30 pm.

The Jardin des Tuileries have been renovated, enlarged, and embellished over the years. In the 17th century, the wide avenue and geometric flowerbeds were laid out. Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned the construction of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 20th century, several classical statues were added to the gardens.
