History of Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France

The Triumphal Arch was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in honor of the victories of his French armies. Construction of the structure began in 1806, the design was inspired by Roman Triumphal Arches. Architect Jean-François Chalgerin created the design. The construction of Arc de Triomphe took over 30 years.

In France, Arc de Triomphe is a symbol of military strength. In 1920, The Unknown Soldier (an unidentified fallen soldier from World War I) was buried beneath the structure. In 1923, a memorial flame was placed on his grave. The annual French Remembrance Day ceremony is held at Arc de Triomphe on May 8th.

Several sculpted images may be seen on both the front and back of Arc de Triomphe. The detailed images relate to important battles in French history. Many of the images portray the victories of Napoleon. The names of Napoleon’s generals and officers may be found on the arch.
